The interdisciplinary exhibition project DIE BUEHNE is delighted to invite you to its 3rd edition with a participation by the Italian-German artist Catherine Biocca on Saturday, the 7th of September 2019 up from 12h at “Der Große Garten” in Gerswalde. Contributing to the "Systemsturz Festival", which takes place for the first time, Biocca presents the audio installation "You're Hired!" (2019) and the video installation "Kitchen Hunt" (2018) in two locations of the garden.

Catherine Biocca's installations, tableaux, animated films and sculptures deal with socio-political issues of the capitalist value system. The artist draws on images as well as language from the advertising, cartoon and media, leading them ad absurdum with the means of repetition and superposition. Thus, the dialogue of the two protagonists of "YOU'RE HIRED!” " (2019), an audio loop installed at the foot of the Großer Garten at the entrance to the forest, constitutes an infinite mis- or cross-communication. The animated film "Kitchen Hunt" (2018) in the garden's barn leaves the viewer in uncanny uncertainty, while it is not clear whether the backward walking female legs are chasing something or whether they are being chased. Catherine Biocca (* 1984, Rome, IT) lives and works in Berlin. She studied Political Science at the University of Luiss in Rome and Fine Arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. From 2014 to 2015 she was Artist-in-Residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

DIE BUEHNE
The performance and exhibition project DIE BUEHNE functions as a forum for investigating social, aesthetic and ecological questions. Situated on the countryside, the program offers artists space for interdisciplinary discourse, and for questioning the meaning of artistic practices today. A focus on interdisciplinary partnerships aims to further artistic research and exploration, and offers a contemplative space where participants and visitors can engage with the presented works. The project has been initiated by Lea Schleiffenbaum and Anna-Lena Werner and it receives generous support from the Ursula-Wandres-Foundation and Tohuwabohu GmbH.

VENUE
A garden is a place of refuge - from everyday life, from convention, from the city, from social structures and expectations. In a garden we can think, experiment, or just be. A blooming hill with a small stream, vegetable fields, fruit trees and meadows, "Der Große Garten“ is a sanctuary around which a strong and solidary community of locals, expats and passers-by has grown. Here social projects and gardening meet contemporary art. DIE BUEHNE is very happy to be an active part of this community.

DEAR FEAR,

WHAT DO YOU WISH TO TELL ME?

....

The interdisciplinary exhibition project DIE BUEHNE is delighted to launch its second season with a performance by Turkish artist Işıl Egrikavuk on Saturday, August 24, 2019 in “Der Große Garten” in Gerswalde. The stories of Gerswalde's past and present residents serve as a starting point for Işıl Egrikavuk’s exploration of common human emotions, experiences and (re-)actions. What unites the story of the former GDR village, the story of urban expats, the story of young refugee boys living in the village castle? And where does fear come into play? Intertwining facts, storytelling and performance, Işıl Egrikavuk’s work shifts between reality and fiction, thus questioning the realities we construct for ourselves. With the participation of Laura Siewert, Özgür Erkök and Tuana Ayaydınlı .

Işıl Eğrikavuk studied Western literature at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul) then went to The School of The Art Institute of Chicago with Koç Foundation scholarship for her MFA in Performance Art. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions residencies, such as Art Souterrain, Montreal (2019), Pluto’s Kitchen, Block Universe, London (2017), Every Kind of Myth is Written With Care, Propaganda in 21st Century, Lenbachhaus Museum, Munich (2017), Art of Disagreement, Salt Galata&Ulus, İstanbul& Ankara (2016-2015), 11th Sharjah Biennial, Sharjah (2013), Reverse Corner, Solo exhibition, Egeran Gallery, Istanbul (2013), Change Will Be Terrific, Salt Istanbul (2012), 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009), Endgame, South Korea (2009), The Interview, Solo exhibition, Boots Space St. Louis, USA (2008). Işıl Eğrikavuk currently lives in Berlin and is part of faculty at Universität der Künste (UdK), Media Department.

The interdisciplinary exhibition project DIE BUEHNE will be inaugurated by a performance of Swiss artist and musician Balz Isler on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at “Der Große Garten” in Gerswalde. Balz Isler investigates contemporary visual culture, drawing on both personal experience and the clip- and documentary culture of the digital age. In his performances, Isler works with various media, experimenting with their organisation and re-organisation in real-time. For the project opening of DIE BUEHNE, Isler will take the audience on a guided tour through “Der Große Garten,” mixing observations and private anecdotes with the locations’ history and natural surroundings. The artist himself refers to his practice as a “process-based appropriation” through pictorial, tonal, and spatial references. The resulting collages paint a complex picture of our present time, approached by Isler in a sensitive and often humorous way. The tour will end in a visual picture-concert situated at the garden's barn. DIE BUEHNE receives generous support from the Ursula-Wandres-Foundation and Tohuwabohu GmbH.

Balz Isler (*1982, CH) lives and works in Hamburg, where he studied time-related media at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 2011 he received a scholarship for the promotion of young artists and scientists of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. He has performed in internationally renowned institutions, most recently the Kunsthalle Basel, the NGBK Berlin, SAVVY Contemporary Berlin and the Kunsthalle Zürich.
